Just before the eagerly anticipated ODI series between Australia and India, the Australian cricket board opted to replace Cameron Green with Marnus Labuschagne in the ODI traveling party. This happened due to the injury warning signs with Green and a way by the management to provide stability in their middle order against what will be a strong and exciting Indian cricket team. Cricket supporters and commentators gave their take, as Labuschagne’s selection adds experience and stability to allow the team to reassert their dominance in the ODI format against India. The ODI series will serve as the critical preparation going forward as both teams begin the process of attempting to find their best combinations moving forward into the ICC Champions Trophy next year.
Cameron Green Ruled Out Due to Injury
Cameron Green, vital as an all-rounder for Australia in the recent months, suffered a minor injury in the latest series and was advised to rest by medical staff. The Australian selectors knew it was not serious, but to not risk aggravating it heading into his Test summer and T20 commitments they felt resting him was the better option.
Australia lose a risk if you regard Green’s all-round skill as strong middle-order batting cover and pace bowling to help the squad depth. However, Marnus is a good reaction from the selectors as they wish to localise their batting against India’s spinner drag.
On the announcement, Australia’s chief selector George Bailey says,
“Cameron has been managing a bit of a niggle and our focus is to make sure he is fit and ready for the longer season ahead of us. Marnus provides us with a solid middle-order option and brings experience in conditions like the subcontinent.”
Marnus Labuschagne’s ODI Comeback

Labuschagne was a member of Australia’s squad for the 2023 World Cup, where he played some vital innings and earned the selectors’ trust again. He has got a great technique, is level headed making him a great option for Australia to provide some stability to finishes.
He has been entirely focused on working on his limited overs game since the last 12 months, focusing on increasing his strike rate and ability to cope with spin. His recent one-day domestic performances and World Cup display, have provided evidence that he can switch and hold tempo, which will assist when facing India and their trio of Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja.
The 30-year-old, right-handed batter with an ODI averaging over 40, is very keen to be back in the fold, stating “It’s always special to put on the baggy green for Australia, and I look forward to contributing, whatever that looks like. Playing against India is always an exciting challenge because I enjoy that challenge. I enjoy the atmosphere; the pressure and competition brings out the best in me.”
Australia’s Squad Balance and Strategy
With Labuschagne’s inclusion into the team, Australia will have a balanced side with youth and experience. The best part of the order will consist of David Warner and Travis Head as the opening batsmen, then Steve Smith, Labuschagne instantly fills a jammed packed middle order along with Glenn Maxwell. Australia will have to rely heavily on Marcus Stoinis and Sean Abbott to perform all-round duties with Green ruled out. The pace attack was led by Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, with Adam Zampa as the preferred spinner. Analysts have confidence in Labuschagne’s future, as he is able to rotate the strike and build those partnerships for Australia, which will be important on Indian pitches against a slower ball as patience is required. Labuschagne will relieve batting responsibility when momentum is sceptical with regular wickets falling.
Former Australian cricketer Shane Watson agrees with the selection saying,
“Labuschagne is a class act. He is the type of player that absorbs pressure and takes over the innings – especially in 50-over innings in India, having players like that in the middle is important.”
India vs Australia ODI Series – A Rivalry Renewed
Regardless, the ODI series between India and Australia remains a heated rivalry in the world of cricket. Both teams have long and proud rivalries that have produced some thrilling finishes and exceptional individual performances over the years. With both teams currently ranked in the ICC’s Top 3 ODI rankings, we are assured of quality cricket for the duration of the series.
India will also want to trial some of their latest combinations with their newly shuffled playing group, as well. With Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill filling up the top three, and Hardik Pandya’s two-way ability, as well as the spinning options of Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav, India has a solid base to build upon.
The series will also serve as a platform for younger players such as Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rinku Singh to present their cases to be included as members in India’s white-ball combinations.
