Hot on the heels of the Chennai Super Kings-Rajasthan Royals trade discussions (that involves a massive swap – one that involves Ravindra Jadeja and Sanju Samson) is the report of a swap of sorts. Team-circle sources say that negotiations have been well progressed although no agreement has been reached. With the IPL retention deadline looming, both sides are still weighing up the long-term effects of the deal.
India would send the out-of-form Jos Buttler to Chennai in exchange for Sanju Samson, while Ravindra Jadeja moving to Rajasthan would be the proposed trade. The talks are not for a one-for-one exchange, however. According to reports, RR are also demanding one more player from CSK’s squad and that has become one of the major hurdles in the negotiations. While names like Sam Curran and Matheesha Pathirana must have figured in internal conversations, CSK are believed to be against releasing any more than one player of repute in the deal.
Interestingly, Ravindra Jadeja happens to be one of CSK’s greatest players in the side for about the better part of a decade now. He has become the face of this sort of franchise thanks to his role as a versatile option, dynamic fielder and big-game player. The possibility of him leaving has got CSK fans quite emotional. His contribution in title-winning seasons also makes it difficult to replace someone like Jadeja according to many.
However, Sanju Samson has been holding the batting order for Rajasthan Royals and also has captained the team for a few seasons. His consistency, control over run chases and leadership skills have helped him become the franchise face. According to reports, Samson has been eager to avail of opportunities with a different team and that has opened doors for CSK and the talks on it.
Samson is a long-term investment in leadership and progression up the top order for Chennai. Samson could fit that vision for rebuilding the structure of the team under a franchise that is looking to the future without most of its senior core. His batting style and calm leadership potentially make him the next focal point at CSK.
The acquisition of Jadeja would provide tremendous value for Rajasthan. His experience, all-round game, left-arm spin and finishing would add a lot would to square thing off and strengthen a balance for the Royals. The team has been looking for a quality Indian all-rounder to complement their strong batting order for a long time now, and Jadeja is just what they need.
The story gained more steam when Jadeja went quiet on social media, prompting speculation about a potential exit. While it doesn’t prove any move, it did contribute to speculation that the trade talks are serious and live.
While the buzz is building, many hurdles remain. Chennai Super Kings are reeling out of so many players and Rajasthan Royals are adamant for one more key player along with Jadeja. The deal remains in negotiation mode until both sides have settled on the outlines of an exchange.
Followers of the two sides are keeping a close eye on how things play out. CSK fans are scared to lose one of their biggest match-winners while RR fans are split between excitement after landing Jadeja and disappointment upon parting with their long-time skipper. Former cricketers and analysts as well have also commented on it and have said the trade will be earth-shattering and it will go down as one of the biggest trades in IPL history
The trade window and retention deadline are shortly approaching and a final decision is expected soon. This would be one of the biggest franchise roster changes seen in the IPL and would significantly alter team strategies and identities with beady-eyed precision as teams plot for the next season.
